Novel Plot Week: Week Two Recap

The second of my three Novel Plot Weeks is over!

It was a busy weekend. My cousin came to visit and stay for a few days, which was fun. The long weekend involved a family reunion, going to church, going to a flea market, and just being with family.

And now for the NPW recap:

The Story:
This week’s project was Roguess, which is a fantasy/mystery/adventure sort of thing. At my starting point, I knew there was a dragon involved, and that my main character has been on the run for years. (You can read about her here.)

Monday:
Having the day off from work, I just spent this one being a little bit lazy. My cousin showed us how to play the game “Apples to Apples” (which, as a word nerd, I found extremely fun); later, she and I went out to lunch. In the evening, my mom, sister, cousin and I went to a corn maze. It’s the first one I’ve been to in years, and it was a lot of fun!

Tuesday:
With the change in schedule for Monday, this was supposed to be “characters and plot” day. I focused mostly on the characters. Everybody has a fact sheet now. And some have different spellings of their names.

Wednesday:
Plot and worldbuilding.

To get a better grasp of the plot, I scribbled some short scenes that take place before the events of the story. I also figured out some more details about the world.

Thursday:
Playlist day.

I’d already had a short list of songs I’d been listening to while plotting and stuff, so this didn’t take long. I also spent some more time writing out plot details.

Friday:
I worked more on the outline. Even though it’s done, I’m still not totally satisfied with some of the events. I think it’s because I’m more of a pantser than a plotter most of the time. Either way, I have some plot points to work from in the event I get stuck in a scene or something, and have a good idea of the structure the story will have.

And that’s a wrap for the second Novel Plot Week! Next week, I’ll be focusing on a story idea currently titled Songbirds.

Are you a plotter, pantser, or plantser? Do you have any favorite NaNo prep methods?

  1. First of all, I'm mad jealous of your handwriting. I have horrid handwriting. Also, this is kind of weird so I'll move on now. =)

I'm super excited to hear more about this one, you had me sold at the awesome title and then I find out there's a dragon? Glad you're doing well with your plotting! Is it getting easier to decide what to write yet?

Also, hardcore plotter over here. I plot and plot and outline and outline. Almost more than I actually write. My favorite thing about NaNo Prep is making playlists, not exactly a method but it gets me excited to start writing! =)

    1. Usually my handwriting doesn't look that neat, haha. :) I've spent a lot of time trying to decode notes I've written...

I think the dragon is one of my favorite parts of this story! I've eliminated Capturing Freedom from the lineup, so now it's just down to Roguess and Songbirds.

There are some projects I outline with detail, but sometimes I just start writing and see where it goes. In the last couple of years, though, I've gravitated toward plantsing.

Playlists are so much fun to make, and they really do help with writing! :)
