Ten Favorite Moments From The Hobbit

In celebration of Hobbit Day, I’m sharing ten of my favorite moments from The Hobbit.

1.  “Struck by lightning!”
From the first time I read The Hobbit, this has been one of my favorite moments, out of one of my favorite chapters. It’s a short segment, but it’s a humorous look at the differences between Hobbits and the other races of Middle-earth. Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, and Men are accustomed to the strange, wild, and dangerous lands beyond the Shire; Hobbits are not.

Then he fell flat on the floor, and kept on calling out “struck by lightning, struck by lightning!” over and over again; and that was all they could get out of him for a long time. – The Hobbit, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party
2.  “Good morning.”
“Good morning!” said Bilbo, and he meant it. – The Hobbit, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party

3.  Forgotten handkerchiefs.
Very puffed he was, when he got to Bywater just on the stroke of eleven, and found he had come without a pocket-handkerchief! – The Hobbit, Chapter Two: Roast Mutton

4.  Light in the Darkness
The sun was shining brilliantly, and it was a long while before he could bear it. – The Hobbit, Chapter Eight: Flies and Spiders

5.  Bilbo’s Cold
It’s a simple thing, but it is a moment when you can’t help but feel sorry for him, having to suffer through a cold in a strange place, just after risking his life a few times.
“Thag you very buch!” – The Hobbit, Chapter Ten: A Warm Welcome

6.  Riddles in the Dark
This is another favorite chapter of mine.
A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo’s heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold fish, sneaking and whispering. – The Hobbit, Chapter Five: Riddles in the Dark
7. A Thief and a Liar
While the entire “Inside Information” chapter is one of my favorites, I really enjoy the conversation between Smaug and Bilbo.

“I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number.”
“Lovely titles!” sneered the dragon. The Hobbit, Chapter Twelve: Inside Information

 8. The End of Smaug
Fire leaped from the dragon’s jaws. The Hobbit, Chapter Fourteen: Fire and Water

9. Bilbo’s Return
One of the most humorous moments in the book is when Bilbo returns home to find his belongings are being sold.

In short Bilbo was “Presumed Dead”, and not everybody that said so was sorry to find the presumption wrong.
The Hobbit, Chapter Ninteen: The Last Stage

10. A Strange Hobbit
Indeed Bilbo found he had lost more than spoons—he had lost his reputation. The Hobbit, Chapter Ninteen: The Last Stage

  1. Love it! Especially the Good Morning scene (in both the book and film). Always brings a smile to my face. The Hobbit will forever remain a classic in my opinion. :]
