Know the Novel | October 2022

The Know the Novel blog party is back! This is one of my favorite events each year, and today I’ll be sharing about a new plot bunny I’m sorting out, which for the moment we’ll nickname Project: Leaf Pile.

What is Know the Novel?

Know the Novel is a three-part linkup where writers can share about their works-in-progress and inspiration. To join the fun, check out Christine’s website!

Project: Leaf Pile

What first sparked the idea for this novel?

This project sprang out of a paragraph that I typed out a few weeks ago. A character appeared in my brain with a few lines of narrative and I didn’t want to risk losing it, so I threw it in a new Word doc and it’s been taking up space in my head ever since.

Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!

I don’t have one other than that I imagine it will be cozy and autumnal and maybe even a little bit romantic.

Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?

The story takes place in a very small town. Initially I thought it might be contemporary, but the more I’m looking at it, the more I’m picturing something just a bit more nostalgic. I don’t quite know if it’s late 1990s or early 2000s, but I do know it’s definitely before smartphones and current social media were as much a part of everyday life as they are now. (Nothing against either of those things, since I use them all the time, but I just can’t picture them in the worldbuilding of this story at all.)

I’m most excited to write the character relationships within the setting, and how everyone does know everyone else (or thinks they do), and letting the setting be a character as well.

Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Jules: Main POV character (and maybe only POV? I’m not sure yet.). She’s a photographer who works for the local newspaper and, like everyone else in town, pretty much knows everyone.

Owen: A newcomer to town who has everyone wondering just what brings him there, even though he fits right in.

Who (or what) is the antagonist?

Still working on that. I don’t think there is really a person or force as an antagonist? This is very much a write-and-see-what-happens story, I think.

What excites you the most about this novel?

If it shapes up the way I imagine it, it will be a bit different than what I usually write. A little episodic, structure-wise. I’m also excited about the tone!

Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

Standalone. (As far as I can tell, at least!)

Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

Plantsing. I have a loose plan in place but I am aware that it will likely take on a life of its own.

Name a few unique elements in this story.

The episodic thing isn’t unique, but it is for me?

Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

The playlist hasn’t been put together yet, though I want to make one. I do have a collage though!
