2018 Top Tens: Books and Movies

Here we are at the end of another year, and it’s time for another end-of-year favorites list! Usually, I do separate posts for my favorite books and movies of the year, but due to lack of time, I’m featuring both lists in today’s post! As always, these are books or movies I read or watched for the first time this year, even if they were not titles released in 2018. With so many great books and movies to choose from, these lists were a challenge to put together!
10.) When Ravens Fall by Savannah Jezowski
A fun take on Norse mythology with a Beauty and the Beast twist. A quick read, and I wanted to know a little more about the characters, but otherwise, I loved it!

9.) Fawkes by Nadine Brandes
I don’t know very much about the Gunpowder Plot, but the setting of it in Fawkes was pretty cool, and I liked the fantasy twist on history and the characters.

8.) Worlds Beneath by K.A. Emmons
A high-stakes sequel that featured more of my favorite character in this series (Finn!) and introduced some intriguing histories about other characters.

7.) The Janus Elixir by Kyle Robert Shultz
Malcolm Blackfire remains incredibly entertaining to read about, and it’s fun to get a look at the Afterverse before Nick and Co. begin their adventures!

6.) Staff and Crown by W.R. Gingell
The Two Monarchies books are hilarious and intriguing, and this installment introduced all kinds of fun adventures.

5.) Blessed are the Misfits by Brant Hansen
The only nonfiction title on this year’s favorites list, this one was thought-provoking and encouraging.

4.) Beren and Luthien by J.R.R. Tolkien
I enjoyed seeing the different versions of the story that’s so iconic throughout Tolkien’s other works.

3.)  It Started with Goodbye by Christina June
A cute, summery contemporary with a Cinderella twist.

2.) The Inkling by K.T. Ivanrest
An immersive short story with fantastic characters. AND INK DRAGONS.

1.)  The Electrical Menagerie by Mollie E. Reeder
A super fun steampunk-ish tale full of wonder and amazing characters!
10.) Boomtown
I watched a lot of older movies this year, but Boomtown stands out as one that wasn’t quite what I expected but kept me intrigued.

9.) Wonder Woman
I loved the twists in the story and the WWI setting, and the characters were so much fun!

8.) Christmas at Pemberley Manor
While not quite as heavy on the Pride and Prejudice retelling aspects as I expected, this was a cute and cozy movie.

7.) Bohemian Rhapsody
My sister and I went to see this one, since Queen is one of her favorite bands and she’s been waiting for this movie for years. I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it and how much fun it was to watch!

6.) Ant-Man and the Wasp
It was great seeing what Scott and the gang were up to in since the events of Civil War and see the team reunite. Also: I am ready to see Scott Lang save the universe in Avengers: Endgame.

5.) Dumplin’
This movie was cute and feel-good while still making me tear up a little bit.

4.) The Greatest Showman
Just as much fun as everyone says, with a great soundtrack. Definitely some of my most-played music this year!

3.) Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
I’d been looking forward to this movie for a while, and loved it! Now to finish reading the book...

2.) The Avengers: Infinity War
Fun to watch and full of twists, just as I hoped it would be. But if the writers could stop making bad things happen to Thor, that would be nice. O_O

1.) The Man Who Invented Christmas
Hilarious, whimsical, and one of the most accurate portrayals of writing I’ve ever seen. Loved it!
What were your favorite books and movies in 2018?

  1. I enjoyed Fawkes as well and of course, Beren and Luthien is amazing!

I was surprised how much I enjoyed Dumplin' because there are parts of the book I loved and other aspects I didn't. (Bo was super annoying in the book, not so much in the movie but he wasn't around a whole lot, which I thought was a GOOD change for the adaptation.)

Of course, I also loved both Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp. I still need to watch Mowgli!

  2. What fantastic lists!!! And I share some of the same favorite books and movies! :D Like Fawkes and The Janus Elixir. Yesss! Definitely two of my most favorite reads. And I plan on The Electrical Menagerie being one of the next books I read because I've only heard good things! I've been wanting to read When Ravens Fall as well.

Wonder Woman, Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Greatest Showman, and Infinity War were some of my most favorite watches this year tooooo!!! Especially The Greatest Showman. *allll the heart eyes* I NEED to watch The Man Who Invented Christmas; it's just shameful I haven't yet! And I'd like to see Mowgli as well!
