2019 Reading Recap: January - March

I had fun putting together these recaps last year, so I’d like to try it again in 2019! (Except this post was supposed to go up in March. Eh.) It’s been a pretty good year of reading so far, with a lot of audiobooks and rereads making the list.

Severed Veil: Tales of Death and Dreams by Bethany A. Jennings

Beautiful writing style, though I did find myself wanting to know just a little more about the characters introduced through these stories!

Lightless by K.T. Ivanrest

Beautiful imagery and a story that packs emotion and a great story arc into just a few pages. (Also: PHAIOS.)

Dragon’s Bane and Dragon’s Might by Melody Jackson

A fun story featuring plenty of dragons and interesting superpower-like abilities. Very plot twisty, and I’m very curious to see where the story goes in the last book.

Someday at Christmas by Kyle Robert Shultz

This was super adorable and slightly sad, but I loved the connection between certain characters!

Paws, Claws, and Magic Tales by Fellowship of Fantasy

A fun anthology. As always with anthologies, I liked some stories more than others, but all were enjoyable!

The Man He Never Was by James L. Rubart

A quick read, though it wasn’t really what I was expecting and felt kind of underwhelming because of that?

The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Stacy Schiff

I listened to the audiobook of this and found it a bit slow to start, but enjoyed seeing the way different events and circumstances played into the events in Salem.

The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine who Outwitted America’s Enemies by Jason Fagone

Another audiobook, which I really enjoyed. Fascinating story, with nifty information about codes and codebreaking.

Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty

Another audiobook. Darker than expected, but I was curious to see just how things would play out.

The Mitford Series Books #3 - #14 by Jan Karon

Some of these were rereads, while others were not (this was my first time reading the newest releases in the series, along with one of the older books). Overall, it remains a favorite series that never fails to wreck my emotions and make me laugh.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Audiobook read. The worldbuilding was subtle but just enough to make it easy to picture, and the characters and their relationships intrigued me (though the romantic element felt rushed in the later parts of the book and I would have liked more development there). I also was a bit unclear on the main antagonists’ motives… But for the most part, I liked this one!

Destination Unknown by Amy Clipston

A random audiobook pick. An okay read. Not my favorite, but I think it was mostly because I struggled to feel connected to any of the characters.

Evermore by Sara Holland

Another audiobook. Like Everless, I was often surprised by the twists, and enjoyed the refreshing spin on a lot of popular story elements. I wish there had been a little something more at times, but overall I really liked this duology.

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh

Also an audiobook. I really liked the atmosphere and the setting, and the way the Pride and Prejudice elements worked in the story!
