Space Girl Summer Recommendations!

Once again, it’s Space Girl Summer! This celebration of summer is hosted by K.J. Haakenson, and is something I look forward to each summer. And this year, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite space girl recommendations!

READING

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
This is one of my all-time favorite series, and a Space Girl Summer staple. Set in a future where Earth is on the verge of war with the kingdom of Luna, this series is a scifi retelling of CinderellaRed Riding HoodRapunzel, and Snow White. There are four main books, a prequel novella about the main villain, two sequel graphic novels, and a collection of prequel and sequel short stories, so lots of space summer reading material!

Rook Di Goo by Jenni Sauer
This is a scifi retelling of Cinderella, about a soldier wrestling with her past. This is the first in a series, and is a really good twist on the fairy tale! The rest of the series is on my TBR list, but they all sound great.

The Archivist by Jameson C. Smith
*casually recommends my own story, hehe* This flash fiction story about an archivist and a space pilot working together to navigate an emergency was initially chosen as part of Havok’s Vice & Virtue theme in October 2022. If you’re a Havok member, you can read it here. It was also featured on the Havok Story podcast, which you can listen to here.

WATCHING

Wall-E
A cozy, cute space adventure with the most adorable robot!

Treasure Planet
SPACE PIRATES. Not only is this a fun movie in itself, it is also a really solid adaptation.

Marvel Cinematic Universe
Not all of the MCU entries are space movies or TV shows, but space plays a big role so it counts, right? My particular favorites for Space Girl Summer vibes are ThorGuardians of the GalaxyAvengers: Infinity War, and Moon Knight

Star Trek
So mostly when I watch Star Trek, I’m usually going to go with one of the newer movies, but the original series and movies are fun too.

The Martian
If survival stories with a mostly-hopeful vibe are your thing, this is a good one.
