All Things New | New Year Musings

I love the idea of choosing a word or phrase to define the new year, though it’s a tradition to which I’m still rather new. But starting with 2018, certain phrases have popped up that certainly seemed to form the theme of the year as it approached.

Toward the end of December 2017, the C.S. Lewis phrase “courage, dear heart” kept popping up in my thoughts, and ended up designating itself as my quote for 2018. Maybe it was inspired by rereading the Narnia books the previous summer, but whatever prompted the phrase as a theme for 2018, it proved fitting. The year involved some intimidating steps and changes, and a constant reminder for courage was more than a little uplifting and inspiring.

As 2018 came to a close, I liked the thought of having another theme for the impending new year. But I didn’t have a single clue as to what that theme might be.

My mom and I talked about it often as the year drew to a close, and I mentioned that nothing had yet made itself known, and maybe 2019 was going to be a year without any particular phrase or word to define what it would be. Not a huge deal, since 2018 was the first year I’d actually had a defining phrase or word at all. But still, I wondered.

Then, New Year’s Eve arrived. I was home from work early and eager to spend the evening relaxing and waiting for midnight while I reflected on the past year. I was in the middle of washing my hair when the phrase “all things new” danced into the middle of my thoughts.

Just three words, and I couldn’t shake the notion that there was more, but I couldn’t remember the full quote or phrase to which they belonged.

As soon as I was out of the shower, I did a quick search (yay, Bible apps!) and went through the verses in the results. Plenty of them to look through, but only one really caught my eye. And I knew as soon as I read it: This was the verse for 2019.

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
R E V E L A T I O N  21:5

To my amusement, it’s been showing up all over the place ever since (not unlike how I discovered my life verse!).

What this verse means for the new year, I’m not exactly sure. As someone who likes new experiences but also clings to the familiar, it’s both intimidating and comforting to have these words to reflect on in the coming months. Because even though I don’t know what will happen in the next year, I know the One shaping my story even when I can’t make sense of it.

Do you choose a word or quote for the new year? What’s something you’re excited about in 2019?
