Worlds Beneath Blog Tour | Q&A with K.A. Emmons

Let’s welcome K.A. Emmons back to Lovely Whatsoevers to share about her newest novel, Worlds Beneath! And let me tell you: This book is SOOOOO GOOD. I loved it even more than the first one. (You can check out a full review of it here.)
ABOUT WORLDS BENEATH

I used to think that seeing was believing, but now, as I struggle to stay alive below the ravine, I begin to realize that - good or bad - I will see whatever I believe.

“Who are you, Icarus, that the earth opens its mouth to receive your blood?” Sensei’s words were my last thoughts before I fell into the bottomless ravine, plunging toward my own death, and bringing about Hawk’s at the same time. Or so I thought.

I woke up underwater. I awoke in a strange and unfamiliar world, filled with maze-like forest, shadows, and nightmares seemingly as vivid and dangerous as reality. I had no idea who I was, or how I got there - I couldn’t remember anything, until I remembered her: Hawk. The other half of my soul.

I knew that in order for her to stay alive, I had to survive and find a way out. But that’s easier said than done when you’re trapped in a realm as deadly as your every thought - and dominated by a hierarchy of ravenous wolf packs.

Alerted by a dream, I realize that Hawk has left the Dimension to come find me. For an instant, I rediscover hope. But that hope quickly burns to ash when I realize that we may not be the only ones down here. Someone else with a thirst for her blood may have survived the fall too. And I may have just lured her right into the jaws of a predator even fiercer than the wolves.

INTERVIEW WITH K.A. EMMONS

What was it like to return to the world of The Blood Race?
Like coming home.

How did your writing and editing processes change between The Blood Race and Worlds Beneath—if at all?
Not too much changed about the process. I did spend a lot more time writing Worlds Beneath than I did The Blood Race though, so I would have to say that was the biggest difference.

I wrote The Blood Race over a 4/5 month period, while it took about a year to write Worlds Beneath, largely because my husband (then fiance) was deployed at the time that I wrote the larger portion of it. Having a loved one on the other side of the globe like that is always a big weight on your mind, so needless to say there were full weeks when I needed and took breaks from many things, including writing. On the flipside of that coin though, Worlds Beneath got me through those long months, and taught me so many things about myself. I loved writing this book, and it’s my favorite in the series.

Worlds Beneath digs deeper into several characters’ stories and introduces a few new faces. Who was your favorite to introduce in this book? Favorite to reveal more about?
Oooh, these are both great questions. I was really stoked to bring some fresh meat into the game (karate term for the newcomers, haha), and my favorite new face to introduce was probably Delta, for a plethora of reasons revealed in the book.

My favorite to reveal *more* about would be Fin, who has a point of view in this book. I loved writing Fin, and I love his character… I think through his POV you get a lot more up-close and personal with him and learn some things that you may not have known in The Blood Race.

If the characters of The Blood Race trilogy could jump into any other fictional world, where would they go?
Oh, hands down Narnia. Because that’s where I’m trying to “jump into” every day of the week, yo. I’m still checking those closets.

The Dimension is in peril on so many levels in Worlds Beneath. Were there any characters who surprised you with where they stood on some of the issues?
Oh, the agony, the peril… mm-mmm. True to real life, we show our true colors under pressure. I mean, we can hold up a facade for a looong time, and do it pretty well when things are calm and collected. It’s when the seas get stormy that our true character is revealed. The students of the Dimension are no different for sure, and pressure is just getting turned up a few notches in this one. I think there could definitely be a few surprise reactions that may not have been expected.

Is there a scene or chapter you’re most excited for readers to experience? How do you hope they’ll react?
This one’s hard to answer without giving away spoilers. There’s a certainly climax (you’ll know it when you get to it) that I’m very very excited about. But above all, I’m pumped about the theme, which is expressed in a short-version in the beginning of the book: beware which wolf you follow, beware which wolf you feed.
