2018 Reading Recap: January - March

So far, this year’s reading has seen a few rereads and a couple of series. My 2018 reading goal is at least fifty books, and currently I’ve read fifteen—and I’m pretty sure I’ve found a few new favorites among them! Now...to the books!

Beren and Luthien by J.R.R. Tolkien

This has been on my want-to-read list since I first heard about its publication, so when I got a bookstore gift card for Christmas, I already knew what I wanted to buy! It was so fun to see the different versions of the story as it progressed over time and how those versions play into the history of Middle-earth. The imagery painted through the words is stunning and full of emotion, and it’s easy to see how important this particular work was to Tolkien.

Abram’s Daughters series by Beverly Lewis

This was a reread/buddy read with my mom. It had been several years since I’d read this series the first time, so while I remembered some of the story, there were plenty of plot twists that I’d forgotten about over time!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

As always, a fun, cozy read and my favorite of Austen’s work.

The Two Monarchies series by W.R. Gingell

I first read Masque in 2016, when it easily became one of my favorite books that year. In 2018, I finally got around to reading some of the other stories in the series. All are fun, fantastical adventures with plenty of mystery and humor.

Close to You by Kara Isaac

I don’t read very many contemporary romance stories, but this one sounded really cute and promised Lord of the Rings references. I loved how it takes place in New Zealand (I’m pretty sure it’s the first book I’ve read that takes place there), and the descriptions make me want to visit there even more. While I liked the story and the characters, I wasn’t completely sold on the romance aspect though.

Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

The Victoria TV series is one of my current favorites, so when I saw there was a companion book to it I knew I wanted to check it out. The story spans many of the same events in first season of the show and often feels like reading the show. There were times when the writing didn’t feel as immersive as I’d have liked, but overall I enjoyed the book.

A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple by Kathryn Lasky

Another one that I hadn’t read in a couple of years. The Dear America books were some of my favorites when I was younger, and are some of my favorites to revisit.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

I’m not really sure how to explain this book? It’s alternate history mixed with fantasy (shapeshifters) and humor. A bit of an odd one, but also a lot of fun.
