Beautiful Books: October 2017

It’s that time of year again! NaNoWriMo approacheth, and with it all those hours of writing prep and trying to wrangle new characters and plot bunnies. This month, I’m joining up with Beautiful Books, a linkup designed for writers to get to know and share about their novels! Beautiful Books is hosted by Sky and Cait, so to find out more and join the fun, check out their blogs.

After a bit of consideration, I finally picked a project for NaNoWriMo! It’s temporarily titled Spinner & Kidd. (If you’re participating in NaNo, let’s be buddies!)

What inspired the idea for your novel, and how long have you had the idea?
I don’t remember exactly what prompted the idea, but I think it came about sometime in the fall of 2016. Probably on a road trip? I remember having the image of my MC in my head long before I knew what his plot was going to be. I started working on the basic storyline in...February, I think.

Describe what your novel is about!
A fantasy with some 1930s and 1950s flair, featuring a man on the run from his past and the agent who holds his future in her hands. It’s also a fairy tale retelling (Rumpelstiltskin).

What is your book’s aesthetic? Use words or photos or whatever you like!
Have a collage:
Images found on Pinterest.

Introduce us to each of your characters!
Kidd: A little scrappy. He’s seen the good and bad in the world and knows which side he wants to be on, though he’s had some trouble getting there. Likes fast cars, guns, and chocolate.
Spinner: Determined to the point of obsession at times. She’s seen some bad stuff, but wants to work on bringing the good into focus again. Likes nice clothing, fast cars, and dancing.

How do you prepare to write? (Outline, research, stocking up on chocolate, howling, etc.?)
I’m planning to do Novel Plot Week later this month. I may try working from a chapter outline this year—

—but since that usually never goes as planned, we’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, I’m researching and trying to envision how the story’s going to be told. Oh, and I’ve downloaded the Scrivener trial since I’ve wanted to try it for a while now.

What are you most looking forward to about this novel?
I’m pretty excited about attempting a Rumpelstilskin retelling, since it’s one of my favorite fairy tales EVER.

List 3 things about your novel’s setting.
Big city with bigger secrets. Dusty backroads outside the city limits. Streets full of whispers about deals made in the dark.

What’s your character’s goal and who (or what) stands in the way?
Kidd: Escaping a prison sentence would be a preferred accomplishment, but he has a lot to answer for.
Spinner: She wants to bring an end to Kidd’s former employer’s crimes, but he’s a difficult man to track down.

How does your protagonist change by the end of the novel?
That remains to be seen...

What are your book’s themes? How do you want readers to feel when the story is over?
I usually don’t know a book’s theme until it’s written, but I have a feeling redemption will be in there somewhere. If all goes as planned, I think readers might feel a bit surprised.

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo this year? What are you writing?
