Beautiful People: July 2017

Beautiful People is a monthly linkup hosted by Cait (of Paper Fury) and Sky (of Further Up and Further In), featuring questions that writers can use to interview their characters. To find out more and join the fun, check out their blogs!

In celebration of Camp NaNoWriMo, this month’s questions are all about authors and their writing habits!

How do you decide which project to work on?
It’s usually a series of chasing plot bunnies and seeing where they lead. I try to prioritize projects as well (example: WIPs with deadlines, what’s ready to be written versus what needs more time to develop, etc.).

How long does it usually take you to finish a project?
I’d say my average is 1-3 months per draft. It varies by project, of course, but I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t like to be working on the same draft of a WIP for much longer than that. (And it also depends on what kind of draft I’m working on—firsts, revisions, novels, shorter projects...)

Do you have any routines to put you in the writing mood?
Not really. I usually have a playlist for each WIP, so I might have that playing in the background. I also check what my writing goal is for the day (if I’ve set one). Other than that, I try to work in short blocks of time with breaks in between.

What time of day do you write best?
Usually at night, but since I can’t always fit in writing then, I try to do a lot more writing in the morning.

Are there any authors you think you have a similar style to?
*sings* WHO AM I?
Honestly, I have no idea whose writing style mine may be similar to. But  I’m curious now...

Why did you start writing, and why do you keep writing?
The internet was out and I was bored. I fell in love with creating adventures and crafting characters. Writing is something I enjoy and have fun with.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve written?
Hmm. As a general thing, I have a difficult time writing character deaths. In terms of projects, TAD2 has had its moments.

Is there a project you want to tackle someday but you don’t feel ready yet?
There are a couple, but they need more time to simmer and develop before I even think about writing them.

What writing goals did you make for 2017 and how are they going?
  • Publish The Assassin’s Daughter: Done!
  • Write two first drafts: Counting short projects, I have already completed this one.
  • Finish two revisions: Same as above.
  • Participate in both Camp NaNo sessions and NaNoWriMo: Two out of three, so far.
Describe your writing process in 3 words or a gif!
Sometimes words happen.

  1. That is so cool you've already met nearly all your 2017 goals. You go, girl! =D

I totally laughed out loud at your answer to the last question. THE GIF. And "Sometimes words happen." Hahaha! Sounds like my process. XD

    1. Thanks! :)

It's one of my favorite GIFs and it was too perfect for the question! My writing process is really all over the place and changing all the time...

  3. The gif that describes your writing process is so hilarious because I relate to it SO MUCH. Half the time I have no idea what I am doing or how anything gets done. WHO AM I???

    1. It's one of my favorites—and SO accurate. But at least the words get written, right? ;D

  4. First, woo! Go you for being so far on your goals for the year! Second, yes, I love the gif you chose so much, I can relate. I'm also glad I'm not the only one that didn't have an answer for the similar style question. haha. I also struggle to write character deaths, so much so that I actually haven't written that many... Most my characters deaths are just planned for future books! Though, there was this one death scene, it's like the cruelest scene I've written, it was an accident...

    1. Thank you! :)

Oh my goodness, yes. Like, I have no idea how to describe my writing style, so I don't even know where to start comparing it? Hehe. And the GIF is honestly one of the best ever!

I try to avoid writing character deaths whenever possible (at least "on-screen" ones. If it's a backstory thing that I don't actually have to show, it's easier to handle, I guess?). I usually have to step away from the WIP for a while after writing them though. They're tough!

*is worried about your characters now* O_O
