Oh, What Fun! Christmas Blog Party: Christmas Treats

Do you make any special treats for the holidays?
It’s a tradition to go to my grandparents’ house (on my mom’s side) and make walnut muffins and fudge. We usually make two or three kinds of fudge. I also like to make sugar cookies (I have a basic recipe I use and just experiment until I figure out new flavors that work well).

How do you feel about peppermint?
Love it. In hot chocolate, cookies, candy canes….

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? If you like hot chocolate, do you prefer marshmallows or no marshmallows?
Hot chocolate for me, with marshmallows please. :)

Do you leave out the traditional cookies and milk for Santa, or a different snack?
When I was little, we usually left out sugar cookies and a Coke.

Favorite Christmas dinner dish?
Probably the turkey and the ham.

And here’s a sugar cookie recipe for you!

A note on this recipe: I basically started it by throwing stuff in a bowl to see how it turned out, so you can adapt it to whatever texture/sweetness you prefer. When mixing the dough by hand, I mostly use melted butter; softened should be fine if you’re using an electric mixer though.

Ingredients:
2 cups self-rising flour

2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup butter (softened/melted—can add more if/as needed)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg

Combine flour, salt, and sugar. Add vanilla and egg. Mix, then add butter until dough is ready to be kneaded. Roll out on flour-dusted surface and shape with cutters. Bake at 300 until bottoms are light brown.

  1. Awwh, allll the Christmas food. And peppermint. Peppermint is the essence of Christmas for me -- I always get a peppermint creamer for my morning coffee once the first snow falls.

Ooh... I haven't made sugar cookies yet this year... I might have to use your recipe. :D

  2. I like that you left out Coke for Santa, I always worried the milk would get warm and make him sick!Fudge! I need to make fudge. And walnut muffins? Sounds delicious! That sounds like such a lovely tradition. XD

Sugar cookies for the win! Also, haha, I created my sugar cookie recipe the same way, just throwing things in the bowl!

    1. That's definitely a good point—wouldn't want him getting sick on such a busy day! :D I don't even remember really when we started doing that—just that most of my childhood Christmases involved leaving Coke and cookies out. We don't really make the fudge or muffins any time except at Christmas (we could, I guess, but we just never do? It's such a Christmas thing for us!), but it's one my favorite traditions. :)

      Yay for baking experiments!
