The Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag (2016)

I've been meaning to do a “recently read” post of sorts for a while now, and this bookish tag from Christine is a perfect opportunity to do just that! :)

So far, I've read 50 books this year. You can see what they all were by checking out this Pinterest board.

On to the questions!

1.) Best book you've read so far in 2016?
This is such a hard question.

I really liked Stars Above, Steelheart, and The Watch That Ends the Night.

2.) Best sequel you've read so far in 2016?
A tough one, but either Stars Above, Happy Again, or Firefight. They're all very different stories but all were enjoyed.

3.) New release you haven't read but want to?
This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee. I don't know much about it, other than it's a Frankenstein retelling, but it sounds kind of interesting. And I'd like to read the two newest books in The Selection series by Kiera Cass, but haven't gotten to them yet.

4.) Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I like the previews I've read so far, so I'm curious to see the spin she takes with this retelling.

This cover is so different from TLC, but I still love it!
5.) Biggest disappointment?
Illuminae, maybe? I didn't really have any expectations for it; I've just seen it popping up throughout different blog reviews and stuff and it looked interesting. For me, it was just an okay read. (The interior formatting was awesome though.)

6.) Biggest surprise?
The Watch That Ends the Night. I was at the library and the simplistic design of the spine and the title caught my eye, so I grabbed it off the shelf. I'd never heard of it before, but it was about Titanic and that was enough to decide to borrow it. I LOVED it. The interior formatting was really cool too.

And The War of the Worlds. I bought it for the eye-catching cover and totally enjoyed reading it. It's pretty easy to read, which isn't always the case with classics (as much as I love the classics, they can be difficult to read sometimes).

7.) Favorite new author?
Um, I'm not sure? I've read several books by authors who are new to me, but I'm not sure I have a new favorite yet.

8.) Newest fictional crush/ship?
I don't think I have any new crushes or ships yet this year.

9.)Newest favorite character?
Hmm. Probably David from The Reckoners series. He's funny and nerdy and I almost instantly loved reading about him.

10.) Book that made you cry?

I rarely ever cry while reading, and so far, I don't think a book has made me cry this year.

11.) Book that made you happy?
Stars Above gave me all the happy feels. AND THE WEDDING WAS SO ADORABLE.

12.) Favorite book-to-film adaptation you saw this year?
The funny thing about most of the adaptations I've seen this year is that I haven't read the books. If comic books count, I'm going to say Captain America: Civil War.

13.) Favorite post you've done so far this year?
Writing a letter from Camp was really fun, and a bit different than my usual writing updates. Also, it was fun to talk about my color-coded editing method.

14.) Most beautiful book you've bought this year?

Stars Above, The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein (I already had a hardcover copy, and now I have a paperback copy too), and The War of the Worlds.

15.) What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Oh, gosh. There are so many I want to read by the end of the year, but I don't know that I'll get to them.

Heartless
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings – I need to reread these.
The Chronicles of Narnia – I haven't read these in a few years and would like to reread them.

What books are you reading now?

  1. Stars Above was quite satisfying, wasn't it? I'm also quite curious to learn about Heartless, since I've enjoyed Marissa Meyer's works in the past. And I'm also interested in your thoughts on Illuminae! I've heard things about the book, mostly flails of joy, so it's interesting that you've got a more tempered opinion of it—although I still take it as a good sign that you didn't totally hate it. :) Thanks so much for tagging me! I'll get to this in a week or two for sure.

    1. I admit, my hopes are kind of high for Heartless, just because TLC was so good!

Hmm, Illuminae. I guess maybe it was the characters that really didn't grab my attention? It was a compelling plot and the structure was really unique, but I just didn't really feel connected to the characters. I may check out the next book eventually though and give it another try. If you read it, I'd be interested in what you think of it.

  2. You did it! YAY. I love seeing what all my buddies are reading and enjoying.

Congrats on reading 50 books so far! I've only read...24. I fail. XD

Stars Above was sooo amazing. I love how it kept popping up in your answers. It's just THAT good. And that Flynn gif is an accurate interpretation of me reading it as well! ALL THE FEELS.

I've been wanting to read a Brandon Sanderson book for yeeeears and still haven't! I NEED to do this soon.

HEARTLESS. Why did I not use that to answer that question as well?? I'm SOOO looking forward to it! I really, really, REALLY hope it's good, because I'm anticipating it so very much!

That's interesting to hear The War of the Worlds was an easier read. Classics can be hard to get through and I never get around to reading them because of that... Shameful, I know. I have such a short attention span. It's bad. XD

I am basically in a constant state of wanting to reread The Hobbit, LotR, and Narnia (which is probably why I've read them sooo many times, hee). But you just can't read them enough!

Okay, this is getting long. BUT BOOKS. I must fangirl! Loved reading this! I'm so happy you did it. ^_^

    1. Oh goodness! I tried to keep the answers varied, but I definitely had to include Stars Above more than once. :) (And that gif is one of my favorites ever!)

The Reckoners books are the only Brandon Sanderson books I've read, but they were pretty good! Lots of bantering and the characters were so much fun.

I can't wait to read Heartless! Although, I don't know that I could ever like it quite as much as TLC. ;)

I wasn't sure I'd like The War of the Worlds that much but it was actually really good. The writing style actually felt really modern, but still had that classic quality to it. Definitely one of the easier classics I've read. :)

Definitely! I think my problem is that when I read them, I have to read ALL of them, and I get distracted by other books sometimes and end up reading them instead... But I like trying to read them at least once every couple of years. I'd love to make it an annual thing eventually. :)
