Beautiful People: August 2014

Beautiful People is a blog meme hosted by Sky and Cait. Each month, they post a series of questions for writers to answer about their characters. To find out more, or to join the linkup, click the button.

This month, I’ll be answering these questions about Delest (and these are some great questions to ask him!). He is one of the characters from The Assassin’s Daughter.

1) What does your character regret the most in their life?
In truth, there are probably two things which he most regrets.

Being unable to change the mind of someone who was once his friend.
Not heeding the warning given to him by this same once-friend.

2) What is your character's happiest memory? Most sorrowful memory?
His happiest memory? I think it might be the day he was appointed to be a guardsman for Tedera. The job was quite a promotion from his former one (which was mostly carpentry work and whatever else he could find).

His most sorrowful...it’s kind of a spoiler? But it is, in some ways, connected to his regrets.

3) What majorly gets on your character’s nerves?
At times, everything

Mostly, he hates passivity. He hates passivity almost as much as he hates incaution.

If the moment and conditions are right, he is of the mind that one should strike while they can. There isn’t a need to rush in too quickly or to hesitate too long.

4) Do they act differently when they're around people as opposed to being alone? If so, how?
He is more wrapped in his thoughts when he is alone than when he is around other people. Otherwise, he acts pretty much the same in either situation.

5) What are their beliefs and superstitions? (Examples: their religion or lack of one, conspiracy theories, throwing salt, fear of black cats.)
Delest is very much a conspiracy theorist. He doesn’t trust most of the governing powers (with good reason). He may or may not be the sort of person who wants to overthrow the government.

6) What are their catchphrases, or things they say frequently?
He doesn’t really have a catchphrase. But he is often spouting off words in effort to rally people to action.

7) Would they be more prone to facing fears or running from them?
The answer to this question very much depends on the fear. Some, he would desire to outrun. Others, he would choose to pick up his sword or whatever weapon might be nearby, and kill it.

8) Do they have a good self image?
Sort of. He carries himself with pride, though he is not always proud of some things he has done. He carries guilt around but tries not to let it show anywhere except in his thoughts. Delest is the sort of person who would rather show himself an example of bravery and calm if it were for the good of those around him.

9) Do they turn to people when they're upset, or do they isolate themselves?
He is rather an isolated person when he is upset, I think. Ideally, he would be able to bury himself in some sort of work until he is distracted. If that work involves helping another person, he has no objections.

10) If they were standing next to you would it make you laugh or cry?
Oh, wow.

To be honest, I might be a little intimidated by him. He has a very strong presence, and I might feel overwhelmed, at first. I think I might lean toward awkward giggling than tears, and I should like to have a lighthearted conversation with him. Delest takes part in much too few of those these days.

  1. Delest, wow... he seems really tall in both body type, and just the aura he gives off. His eyes probably gleam terrifyingly. Thanks for letting me meet him in a safe environment!

  2. Delest can certainly be intimidating when he wants to be, but he's a lot of fun to write. :)

    Thanks for stopping by!
